Enrolment FAQ

Q: What kind of results will I see in my child?

“Through studying with the Kumon Method, your child will experience the joy of learning and the discipline for daily study will be instilled with good study habits. Students start with the level where they can attain a perfect score studying on their own. This fosters a joy for learning, and instills the discipline of daily study with good study habits.

Gradually students begin to study topics they have not previously learned. Through Kumon, students will be able to advance beyond school grade level independently. This develops their analytical ability, instills perseverance and fosters confidence and a healthy self-esteem.

Eventually students study far beyond school grade level independently. They will excel in their other subjects as well because they have confidence and are applying the self-learning skills developed through Kumon.

Q: What is the right age for my child to start Kumon?

Kumon students range from preschoolers to secondary school students. You may contact your preferred Centre to arrange for a free assessment for the Instructor to recommend if your child is suitable to start Kumon.

Q: What is the difference between Kumon and tuition?

Kumon is an independent, self-study curriculum. By studying at a level that is appropriate to the child’s ability, the child will be able to advance beyond his or her school grade level without being specifically taught.

Q: Does self-learning mean that the Instructor does not teach anything?

Self-learning means that students study worksheets independently. The worksheets have been designed in a way that allows students to figure out how to solve problems on their own. Examples and explanations are clearly provided when moving on to new topics, encouraging students to self-learn and advance independently at all times.

Instructors observe how each student studies, plans and assigns worksheets and motivates the student. When students encounter difficulties, the Instructor assists the students by giving subtle hints so that they will be encouraged to progress and take on further challenges.

Q: If my child is behind his/her class, how long will it take to catch up to grade level?

Kumon’s individualised instruction differs from one-on-one tutoring services that provide “quick fix” short term boosts in performance. If your child is a bit behind fellow classmates, our Instructor will draw up an indiviualised study projection with the short-term goal of reaching school grade-level competency within twelve months.

Q: How much help am I expected to give my child at home?

Behind every successful student is a supportive parent and your child should be able to complete their daily homework independently as each worksheet builds on skills they will have developed on the previous level.

Q: Will my child get bored in school after advancing with Kumon?

Students with a firm grasp of the fundamentals in maths and reading become much more engaged and self-confident in school. Doing homework each night also becomes less daunting and time-consuming – a plus for both students and parents.

Q: Do you help children to speak English or what is the aim of the English Programme?

The Kumon English Programme focusses on topics ranging from the development of phonics and expanding vocabulary, to the critical analysis of literary texts. It’s important for children to be exposed to a variety of genres to maintain reading and speaking proficiency, which is supported in the Kumon English Programme.

Q: What is the duration of the Kumon Programme?

Kumon is not a quick fix programme and neither it is time-bound. Kumon is a long-term education program that seeks to build student’s mastery in mathss and reading.
